JSE-listed logistics group Grindrod has started operations at Phase 1 of a new United Container Depots (UCD) facility in Salt River, Cape Town.

UCD, which is fully owned by Grindrod, which also has facilities in Durban and Johannesburg.

Speaking at the ribbon-cutting ceremony held earlier this month, Grindrod CEO Xolani Mbambo said the R60-million first phase can accommodate 5 000 twenty-foot equivalent units.

The 40 000 m2 site is less than 3 km from the Port of Cape Town, and offers 240 refrigerated container power outlets.

Phase 2, which was already in the works, would bring the project’s capital cost to just under R200-million, noted Mbambo.

The expansion project will add 23 000 m2 to the existing site, and will include a rail link, as well as a bulk mineral site.

Western Cape Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism Minister Dr Ivan Meyer applauded Grindrod for completing the project in five months, especially as it included the above- and below-ground removal of asbestos.

He said the project would provide a significant boost to agricultural exports from the Western Cape.

He added that the province was targeting R200-billion in new investment by 2030, and R450-billion by 2035.

The province also wanted to triple exports by 2035 but required “a working logistics chain” to achieve this.

Meyer noted that Transnet had, in the past few months, delivered on its promise to boost operational efficiency at the Port of Cape Town.
